The Listen series explores the perception of Stellenbosch university students regarding safe and unsafe areas in Stellenbosch on and off campus.

 

I have set out to investigate how the sounds and the process of urbanization within these areas effect our levels of stress when passing through these areas by foot.

This image was inspired by overlaying photography taken in the Jan Marais Nature Reserve over that of the fourth stressful space (corner of Andringa and Merriman street) to this series. This series aims to comment on the visual and audiovisual process of urbanization and digitalization, as it plays a major role in our everyday levels of physical and psychological stress especially for students that travel by foot.

Modern way of life - although it has created an accessibility that had not existed before the digital age - is creating confusion. It is overshadowing the true connection that man once shared with nature. This series therefore visually draws on this concept of this overlaying and confusion that is taking place between man, digital progression and nature.
